vanhaa ja kaunista was a special shop for finnish 20th century design – art glass, ceramics, tableware, furniture, lamps and art textiles, founded by mother marja raikamo and daughter katy elo in 1986.
…aalto, franck, wirkkala, sarpaneva, nyman, toikka, nurmesniemi, gardberg, still, marimekko…
it all started in the early 70’s when great pieces of finnish design appeared one by one into our lives at our home. beautiful pieces of furniture by alvar aalto, dinnerware by kaj franck, textiles by dora jung and a few pieces of bowls and vases by tapio wirkkala and timo sarpaneva. and it had nothing to do with with luxury, just good quality finnish industrial design that felt right for our home.
but already in the 80’s we felt we had such a knowledge of finnish design that we could share it with other people. so, vanhaa ja kaunista was founded in 1986. since then we looked for quality pieces and icons of finnish design to our customers all over the world.
after closing down our shop at liisankatu (october 2014) we operated at antique fairs and on the internet and held a private showroom in helsinki. finally, in 2018 vanhaa ja kaunista closed operations for now.
thank you to all our customers, colleagues and friends for the wonderful years!
